Geoffrey William Hughes was born on 2 February 1944 in Wallasey, Cheshire, England, the son of Ada (née Tulloch) and Bill Hughes. He grew up in Liverpool, attending Ranworth Square Primary School and later Abbotsford Secondary Modern School in Norris Green before embarking on a repertory career at the Victoria Theatre in Stoke‑on‑Trent. His West End debut came in the Lionel Bart and Alun Owen musical Maggie May, and he quickly became a familiar face in British theatre, appearing in productions such as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Say Goodnight to Grandma, and Run For Your Wife. In 1968 Hughes lent his voice to the iconic animated film Yellow Submarine, portraying Paul McCartney, a role that introduced him to an international audience. His breakthrough on television arrived in 1974 when he was cast as the lovable bin man Eddie Yeats in the long‑running soap Coronation Street, a character he played for nine years and briefly revived in 1987, cementing his status as a household name in the UK.

After leaving Coronation Street, Hughes showcased his comic timing as the slothful yet endearing Onslow in Keeping Up Appearances (1990‑1995), appearing in every episode of the 44‑episode run. He later joined the cast of The Royle Family as “Twiggy,” a role he inhabited from 1998 until 2008, and portrayed the roguish Vernon Scripps in Heartbeat (2001‑2005, 2007). His film work spanned from Smashing Time (1967) to Flick (2008), while his stage credits included a celebrated turn as the Angel Gabriel in Liverpool Nativity (2007). Diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1996, Hughes endured a relapse in 2010 that forced his retirement; he was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight in 2009 and remained active in charity work. He passed away peacefully on 27 July 2012 at the age of 68, leaving behind a legacy of versatile performances and a reputation as one of Britain’s most beloved character actors.
