Geoffrey Horne: Movies & Box Office

Geoffrey Horne, born on August 22, 1933 in Buenos Aires, Argentina to American parents, spent his early childhood moving between continents before settling in the United States. At age five he joined his mother in Havana, Cuba, and ten years later he was sent to a small New England school for troubled children, an experience he later described as formative. He eventually enrolled at the University of California, where his passion for performance blossomed and he decided to pursue acting as a career. Moving to New York, Horne appeared in an off‑Broadway production that flopped, but he quickly secured television work, including an adaptation of Billy Budd, and became a member of the prestigious Actors Studio. His breakthrough arrived in 1956 when he auditioned successfully for The Strange One (1957), a film notable for its all‑Actors‑Studio cast and for launching the careers of Ben Gazzara and George Peppard. Producer Sam Spiegel recognized Horne’s talent and signed him to a five‑year contract, which led to his memorable role as Lieutenant Joyce in the Academy Award‑winning classic The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957). Over the next decade Horne appeared in a string of high‑profile projects such as Bonjour Tristesse (1958), the television anthology series The Twilight Zone (“The Gift”, 1962), and The Outer Limits (“The Guests”, 1963). Though he never became a household star, he remained a respected character actor and was considered for major roles, including the part of Bud Stamper in Elia Kazan’s Splendor in the Grass, which ultimately went to Warren Beatty. In the 1980s Horne shifted his focus toward stage work and teaching, performing in a New York production of Richard III (1980) and joining the cast of Merrily We Roll Along (1981) as its oldest member. Since then he has devoted much of his energy to coaching actors at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, sharing the techniques of method acting with new generations while occasionally appearing in film and television projects such as Big Daddy (1999).
