Genevieve Nnaji is a pioneering Nigerian actress, producer, and director whose career spans over three decades, beginning as a child performer on the television soap opera Ripples at age eight. Born on 3 May 1979 in Mbaise, Imo State, she grew up in Lagos as the fourth of eight children in a middle‑class family, where her father worked as an engineer and her mother taught at a nursery school. After completing secondary education at Methodist Girls College, she earned a bachelor's degree in Creative Arts from the University of Lagos, where she simultaneously auditioned for roles that would launch her prolific film career. By 1998 she entered Nollywood’s burgeoning industry with the movie Most Wanted, and she has since starred in over two hundred films, including notable titles such as Last Party, Mark of the Beast, and Ijé: The Journey.

In addition to her acting achievements, Genevieve Nnaji broke new ground as a recording artist with her 2004 debut album One Logologo Line, blending R&B, hip‑hop, and urban sounds, and she became the iconic “Face of Lux” the same year. Her accolades include the historic 2005 Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, making her the first recipient of that honor. Recognized as one of Nigeria’s highest‑paid female actors in 2009, she was praised by Oprah Winfrey as the “Julia Roberts of Africa.” Transitioning behind the camera, she produced Road to Yesterday in 2015 and directed Lionheart, which premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival and became Netflix’s first original film from Nigeria.
