Gemma Bolognesi was an Italian actress who had a career spanning nearly four decades, from her early stage work in the 1910s to her final film appearances in the 1950s. Born on 4 November 1894 in the coastal town of Cesenatico, she began acting at an early age and made her professional debut with the ensemble of the prestigious Teatro Manzoni in Milan under the direction of Marco Praga. Her theatrical talent quickly earned her recognition, and in 1919 she was promoted to the position of first actress in the ensemble, working alongside Aristide Baghetti. The following year she led her own ensemble with Ettore Berti, continuing to build her reputation on the Italian stage throughout the early 1920s. Bolognesi's stage career was marked by collaborations with several notable figures in Italian theater. She worked alongside Enzo Biliotti in 1921, and from 1922 to 1926 she was affiliated with the Teatro del Popolo in Milan, where she became its first actress in 1924. Subsequent seasons saw her performing with companies organized around Luigi Zoncada, and in 1932 she worked alongside Carlo Tamberlani. Despite her success on stage, Bolognesi also ventured into cinema early in her career, making her film debut in Cura di baci (1916), directed by Emilio Graziani-Walter. However, she found little satisfaction in this initial cinematic experience and chose to focus primarily on her theatrical work. It was not until the mid-1930s, when the era of major stage roles had passed, that Bolognesi transitioned more fully into film and developed into a sought-after character actress. She became known for portraying cultured women, and with her distinctive blonde, luscious hair, she brought a unique flair to her secondary roles, earning her the nickname of the Italian Mae West. In the 1930s, she also worked frequently for EIAR, the Italian radio service, expanding her presence across multiple media. After World War II, she continued her film career until 1954, after which she withdrew to her birthplace of Cesenatico, where she passed away on 26 March 1983 at the age of 88. Throughout her career, she appeared in more than thirty films, leaving a lasting legacy in Italian cinema and theater.
