Gardner James (March 16, 1903 – June 23, 1953) was an American film actor whose career spanned both the silent film era and the early years of sound cinema. Born in New York City, New York, James began his professional acting journey after gaining valuable stage experience alongside the celebrated British actor George Arliss. He made his film debut in 1922 with a role in Beyond the Rainbow, marking the beginning of a nearly two-decade career in Hollywood. In 1925, James traveled to Los Angeles as a coal-hand aboard a vessel, and the following year, he secured a lucrative five-year contract with Inspiration Pictures, which significantly helped establish his presence in the competitive film industry. This transition from stage to screen allowed him to explore various roles and build a versatile acting portfolio.

Throughout his career, James appeared in numerous notable productions across a variety of genres. While he once played a lead role, he was more frequently billed third in the cast of the films he appeared in. His diverse filmography includes westerns such as Hell-Bent for Heaven (1926), Silent Sanderson (1925), and The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come (1928), as well as dramas like The Passionate Quest (1926) and The Mating Call (1928). He also participated in action and adventure films, including The Dawn Patrol (1930), the swashbuckling classic Captain Blood (1935), and the dramatic production Dante's Inferno (1935), where he shared the screen with major stars of the era. His final credited role was in the western serial Adventures of Red Ryder (1940), after which he retired from the screen entirely. On a personal note, James was married to the actress and writer Marian Constance Blackton, the daughter of the founder of Vitagraph Studios. However, their marriage rapidly ended in divorce, and James eventually withdrew from public life. He passed away on June 23, 1953, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 50.
