She adopted her mother's maiden name professionally, becoming known as Gabrielle Brune throughout her lengthy and varied career in the entertainment industry. Her mother, an accomplished actress and singer in her own right, clearly influenced her daughter's eventual path into the performing arts, nurturing her talents from an early age. Brune began her career on stage in 1930, quickly establishing herself as a versatile performer capable of adapting to multiple formats.
