Freda Charcilia Payne (born September 19, 1942) is an American singer and actress whose career spans more than six decades, making her one of the most enduring figures in R&B, soul, and disco. Raised in Detroit, Michigan, she absorbed the sounds of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday before attending the Detroit Institute of Musical Arts, where she began singing commercial jingles and winning local talent contests. In 1963 she moved to New York City, collaborating with Quincy Jones, Pearl Bailey and Bill Cosby, and released her debut jazz‑oriented album After the Lights Go Down Low and Much More!!! on Impulse! the following year. After a stint touring Europe and recording in Sweden, Payne returned to the United States and appeared on television shows such as The Merv Griffin Show and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Her Broadway breakthrough came in 1967 when she understudied Leslie Uggams in Hallelujah Baby and later performed in Lost in the Stars. The turning point arrived in 1969 when she signed with the newly formed Invictus label; her 1970 single “Band of Gold” skyrocketed to No. 3 in the U.S. and No. 1 in the U.K., earning a gold record and selling an estimated two million copies worldwide. Subsequent hits like “Deeper and Deeper” and “Bring the Boys Home” cemented her status as a pop‑soul icon, while albums such as Contact and Reaching Out showcased her versatility. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s Payne shifted focus to disco releases on Capitol and to acting, appearing in films like Private Obsession and TV series including Living Single. She hosted the talk show Today’s Black Woman in 1981 and continued recording into the 1990s and 2000s, releasing Come See About Me and collaborating with artists such as Cliff Richard. In recent years she has performed tribute shows to Ella Fitzgerald, appeared on American Idol, and received honors including induction into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame (2017) and a Lifetime Achievement award from the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame (2023).
