Frankie Wilson (born Francis Wilson on 26 July 1970 in Belfast, Northern Ireland) was a versatile Irish sportsman whose career spanned Gaelic football, association football, and coaching, as well as a respected tenure as a physical‑education teacher. From his teenage years he displayed a natural aptitude for the Gaelic game, joining the Lámh Dhearg club at just 17 and contributing to the historic first Antrim Minor Football Championship victory in 1988. Four years later he helped the same club capture the senior county title, cementing his reputation as a dynamic left wing‑forward. His performances earned him a place on the Antrim senior football panel in 1992, where he played a pivotal role in the team’s run to the All‑Ireland Senior B Football Championship final, although they fell short against Wicklow. Over the next decade Wilson balanced his inter‑county duties with a semi‑professional soccer career, featuring as a midfield stalwart for a variety of Northern Ireland Football League sides, including Crewe United, Cliftonville, Carrick Rangers, Ballyclare Comrades, Larne, Omagh Town and Bangor. His dual‑code experience made him a rare figure in Irish sport, admired for his work ethic and adaptability on both the pitch and the Gaelic field. After hanging up his boots, Wilson transitioned into management, taking charge of Bangor where he guided the club to the coveted Steel & Sons Cup in 2011. He later applied his tactical insight at Lurgan Celtic, Sport and Leisure Swifts and Banbridge Town, while also serving as the long‑standing manager of the Northern Ireland national under‑18 schoolboys football team, nurturing the next generation of talent. Parallel to his coaching responsibilities, Wilson devoted himself to education, becoming head of the PE department at Our Lady and St Patrick’s College in Knock, where he inspired countless students with his passion for sport and healthy living. A former pupil of Rathmore Grammar School, he remained deeply connected to his community throughout his life. In January 2022 he was diagnosed with terminal bile‑duct cancer, and despite a valiant fight, he passed away on 28 October 2022 at the age of 52, leaving a lasting legacy across multiple sporting disciplines and in the hearts of those he taught and coached.
