Juan Evo Morales Ayma (born 26 October 1959 in Isallavi, Oruro Department, Bolivia) rose from a modest Aymara farming family to become the first indigenous president of Bolivia and a polarising figure in Latin American politics. After completing only part of his technical studies and serving mandatory military service in the Bolivian Army (1977‑1978), he moved to the Chapare region where he began cultivating coca and organizing the local cocalero union, quickly gaining a reputation as a charismatic labor leader. His activism against U.S.-backed coca eradication campaigns led to multiple arrests, beatings and even a life‑threatening ambush by the Bolivian police in 1989, events that solidified his anti‑imperialist credentials and propelled him onto the national stage. In 1995 Morales entered electoral politics, was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1997, and founded the Movement for Socialism (MAS) in 1998, a party that merged indigenous grassroots demands with socialist economics. Winning the 2005 presidential election with 53.7 % of the vote, he took office on 22 January 2006 and immediately instituted policies to nationalize hydrocarbon revenues, expand social programs, and rewrite the constitution to recognize Bolivia as a plurinational state. His tenure saw notable reductions in poverty and illiteracy, massive infrastructure projects, and a re‑orientation of foreign policy toward left‑leaning governments such as Venezuela and Cuba, while simultaneously antagonising the United States and domestic elites. Critics accused him of democratic backsliding, environmental neglect, and tolerating coca‑related drug production, especially after a controversial 2013 constitutional court ruling allowed him to run for a third term. Following disputed results in the 2019 election, widespread protests forced his resignation, exile to Mexico and Argentina, and eventual return in 2020, where he remains a powerful, albeit contested, figure within Bolivian politics.
