Eugenio Martín Márquez (15 May 1925 – 23 January 2023) was a Spanish film director and screenwriter whose career spanned the golden age of European genre cinema, especially during the 1960s and 1970s. Born in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, Martín’s early childhood was marked by the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War, which forced his family to flee to Granada where he later attended the Universidad de Granada and founded the city’s first film society. While still a student he entered the Institute of Cinematic Investigation and Experiences in Madrid, producing a series of critically praised short films and documentaries before releasing his debut feature, Despedida de soltero, in 1957. The director quickly capitalized on Spain’s popularity as an affordable shooting location for international productions, collaborating with foreign talents such as Nicholas Ray and gaining exposure to a wide array of cinematic styles. In 1966 he directed The Bounty Killer (released in the United States as The Ugly Ones), a Western that he claimed pre‑figured elements of Sergio Leone’s later work. Martín’s versatility earned him the reputation of “an auteur in every genre,” a label reflected in his eclectic filmography that includes Westerns, musicals, giallo‑type thrillers, and horror. His most celebrated work, Horror Express (1972), starring legendary actors Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, has achieved lasting cult status and was highlighted in Fangoria’s 101 Best Horror Movies You’ve Never Seen. Although his later years saw a decline in international visibility and a shift toward Spanish‑language television, Martín remained an influential figure until his death in Madrid at the age of 97, leaving behind a legacy of inventive, low‑budget genre filmmaking that continues to inspire cinephiles worldwide.
