Erminio Spalla, nicknamed "Occhiovivo" (Bright Eyes), was a remarkably multifaceted Italian artist who achieved distinction in the brutal arena of professional boxing before conquering the worlds of opera, fine arts, and cinema. Born on July 7, 1897, in Borgo San Martino, Italy, Spalla initially pursued rigorous academic training in fine arts at the prestigious Brera Academy, but his life took a dramatic turn in 1910 when he viewed footage of the world boxing championships and resolved to enter the ring. Standing at an imposing 1.85 meters with an orthodox stance, he quickly dominated the heavyweight division throughout the 1920s, making history as the first Italian boxer ever to capture a European heavyweight title in 1923—a reign he held until losing to Paulino Uzcudun in 1926.
