Erasmo Carlos (born Erasmo Esteves on 5 June 1941) was a seminal Brazilian singer‑songwriter and actor whose career spanned more than six decades, making him one of the most enduring figures in Brazilian popular music. He grew up in the Tijuca neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro, where he befriended future legend Tim Maia, who taught him his first guitar chords and ignited his lifelong fascination with rock ’n’ roll, Elvis Presley, and American cinema. In the late 1950s he joined a vocal group that evolved into The Snakes, later renamed The Boys of Rock, and it was during this period that he adopted the stage surname “Carlos” in homage to his close friend Roberto Carlos and to Carlos Imperial, a key promoter of the emerging youth culture. The duo of Erasmo and Roberto became the backbone of the Jovem Guarda television show, where Erasmo earned the nickname “Tremendão” for his flamboyant Elvis‑inspired outfits and energetic performances of hits such as “Gatinha Manhosa” and “Festa de Arromba.”

Throughout the 1970s Erasmo expanded his musical palette, signing with Polydor and releasing albums like Carlos, Erasmo (1971), which featured a controversial Caetano Veloso‑penned ode to marijuana, and later embracing samba‑rock with tracks such as “Coqueiro Verde.” The 1980s saw an ambitious collaborative project that paired him with icons like Gil Gil, Gal Costa, and Tim Maia, while his 2009 album Rock ’n’ Roll paid tribute to his first love, blending new compositions with classic rock sensibilities.
