Emma Dumont was born on November 15, 1994 in Seattle, Washington, United States. From a very young age they displayed a passion for performance, appearing in community theatre productions at age six with Seattle Public Theatre and Seattle Musical Theatre. Their early education included Washington Middle School and James A. Garfield High School before they chose homeschooling to accommodate an increasingly demanding modelling and acting schedule. They later refined their craft at the Orange County High School of the Arts in Santa Ana, California, studying in the Music and Theater Conservatory. In addition to artistic pursuits, Dumont cultivated a strong interest in science and technology, joining a FIRST Tech Challenge team in Pasadena in 2011 and a FIRST Robotics Competition team in Burbank the following year, even speaking at the 2013 FIRST World Championship. Their breakthrough in modelling came with a victory in V Magazine’s V A Model search in January 2010, earning a contract with Ford Models and a feature in the March 2010 issue.

The acting career of Emma Dumont quickly accelerated after a debut film role in True Adolescents (filmed 2007, released 2009) and a supporting part in Dear Lemon Lima (2009). They secured a lead in the NBC pilot Metro in 2011 and later that year joined the ABC Family series Bunheads as Melanie Segal, a role that highlighted both their dance skills and on‑screen charisma.
