Elias Moadab was a prominent Egyptian actor and singer of Jewish heritage, born on 6 February 1916 in the city of Tanta, Egypt, to a Syrian Jewish father and an Egyptian Jewish mother. When he was four years old, his family relocated to Cairo, where they settled in the old Jewish quarter of the city, and he graduated from the Lycee school in 1932. At the beginning of his professional career, Moadab worked in his father's eyewear shop and repaired watches before transitioning into the world of entertainment. In 1944, he adopted the stage name Elias Moadev and began his artistic journey as a singer at the famous nightclub «Elborg», where he was introduced to prominent figures in Egyptian cinema such as Bishara Wakim and Ismail Yasin, who opened the doors for him to enter the film industry. Moadab made his film debut in 1947 with roles in Habib al-Omr (Lifelong Lover) and Sittat Afirit (Women Are Fairies), quickly establishing himself as a fixture in Egyptian comedy cinema. Over the course of approximately five years, he appeared in roughly 20 to 25 films, often sharing the screen with legendary performers including Ismail Yassin, Leila Mourad, Samia Gamal, Tahiya Karioka, Shadia, and Anwar Wagdi. He was particularly known for playing comic characters who spoke with a Shami accent, so convincingly that many audiences believed he was Syrian or Lebanese, when in fact he was a native Egyptian who lived on Firah Street in the Jewish Quarter (Haret al-Yahud). Beyond his film career, Moadab performed at prestigious nightclubs such as Al-Ariozna and Helmiyya Palace, and earned substantial incomes performing at private events including weddings and bar mitzvahs. Despite facing pressure from Zionist organizations after 1948 to emigrate to Israel, he famously declared: "Egypt is my homeland; here I was born and here I shall be buried," while steadfastly maintaining his Jewish rituals. Tragically, after suffering chronic headaches in his later years, he died during surgery to remove a brain tumor on 28 May 1952, just shy of his 36th birthday, leaving behind a lasting cinematic legacy and being posthumously commemorated at festivals such as the Luxor Egyptian and European Film Festival as a key figure of Egyptian cinema's golden age.
