Doreen June Mantle (22 June 1926 – 9 August 2023) was a prolific British actress whose career spanned nearly six decades, making her a beloved fixture of television and stage. Born in Johannesburg to English parents, she returned to Britain as an infant, only to go back to South Africa four years later where she attended the University of the Witwatersrand and honed her craft in the campus dramatic society and on amateur radio. After a brief stint as a social worker, she moved to London in 1949, performed at the Gateway theatre, and married engine‑sales manager Graham Smith in 1953. Settling permanently in the UK at age 23, she rejected apartheid and began a life dedicated to performance. Mantle’s early professional work included repertory theatre in Colchester, a role with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1967, and a pivotal performance in William Trevor’s Going Home at the King’s Head in 1972, which helped to launch a flourishing stage career featuring productions such as My Fair Lady, The Seagull and Hamlet. Her outstanding supporting role in Death of a Salesman earned her the 1979 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, cementing her reputation as a versatile talent. In television, Mantle became a familiar face through one‑off appearances on series like The Duchess of Duke Street, The Bill and Casualty, but she achieved iconic status in her sixties when she was cast as the kindly yet naive Jean Warboys in the hit sitcom One Foot in the Grave (1990‑2000), appearing in 18 episodes and delighting audiences with her warm humor. She later reprised her comedic brilliance as Queenie the lollipop lady in Jam & Jerusalem (2006‑2009) and made a memorable guest turn as Joy Fishwick on Coronation Street (2010‑2011). Even at 96, Mantle appeared in the One Foot in the Grave 30‑year retrospective, demonstrating her enduring passion for the craft. Throughout her long career, she also contributed to radio dramas, performed in film (Yentl, 1983), and remained a cherished figure in British entertainment until her passing at home in London at age 97.
