Donald Buka (August 17, 1920 – July 21, 2009) was an American supporting actor whose career spanned the golden age of radio, Hollywood cinema, and television. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he demonstrated an early passion for the performing arts, which led him at just 17 years old to Pittsburgh to study at Carnegie Tech. It was there that his destiny took a remarkable turn—while at the prestigious institution, he read a scene in an otherwise-empty theater for the legendary husband-and-wife acting duo Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. Impressed by his raw talent, Lunt and Fontanne immediately invited Buka to join their company, and he spent the next three years touring with them, gaining invaluable stage experience that would shape his future career. This early break marked the beginning of a long and varied journey through multiple entertainment mediums. Buka's career blossomed across radio, film, and television, beginning with his appearance on the CBS radio program Let's Pretend, which served as his entry point into mass media. He caught the attention of billionaire mogul Howard Hughes, who offered him a lucrative seven-year contract after Buka had worked on a film for Hughes for only three days—a remarkable testament to his screen presence. Buka agreed to the contract with a stipulation that he be allowed to perform on stage during the traditional nine-month theatrical season each year. On screen, he appeared in episodes of popular series such as Dragnet, Ironside, Perry Mason, and The High Chaparral, establishing himself as a reliable supporting presence. His Broadway career was equally distinguished, beginning with his debut in Twelfth Night in 1940 and concluding with Design for Living in 1984. Throughout his life, Buka was married three times—to Irene Maskell Mitchell in 1968, to Joy Weber in 1972 with whom he had one child, and to Suzanne Sinaiko in 1993 until her death in 1998. He passed away on July 21, 2009, in Reading, Massachusetts, at the age of 88, leaving behind a rich legacy in American entertainment.
