Dominic Pace (1851‑1907) was a Maltese theologian and minor philosopher whose scholarly life was deeply intertwined with the Dominican Order. Born on December 17, 1851 in the historic fortified town of Vittoriosa, Malta, he entered the Order of Preachers at the age of sixteen, beginning a vocation that would span four decades of teaching, preaching, and intellectual defense of Scholastic doctrine. After completing his preliminary studies in philosophy at the Dominican studium in Rabat and theology in his native Vittoriosa, the cholera epidemic forced him to continue his formation in Florence, Italy, where he earned his colours in both disciplines in 1874. Upon his return to Malta he was ordained a priest, appointed Master of Dominican Students at Rabat, and immediately assumed a chair in philosophy at the Dominican Studium Generale, a position he held until his death. His most enduring contribution, the pamphlet Difesa della Dottrina di S. Tommaso d’Aquino (1877), was a rigorous rebuttal to contemporary accusations that Thomas Aquinas had erred or even heretical, and it cemented Pace’s reputation as a steadfast defender of Aristotelico‑Thomist Scholasticism. The work, though brief at twenty‑five pages, combined theological argumentation with extensive biblical citation, illustrating his conviction that reason and faith must coalesce under the guidance of Aquinas’s thought. Pace’s scholarly achievements earned him election to the prestigious Philosophical‑Medical Academy of Bologna in 1877 and later the honorific title of General Preacher of the Order, awarded in Rome. He spent his later years continuing to lecture, write, and mentor Dominican novices, influencing a generation of Maltese clergy and scholars. His death on June 29, 1907 in his hometown was marked by a funeral in Vittoriosa, yet he was interred in the Dominican church of Rabat, reflecting the deep ties he maintained with the community that shaped his intellectual journey.
