Dean Jagger was an American actor whose career spanned more than six decades, beginning on the vaudeville circuit and culminating in acclaimed roles on both the silver screen and television. Born on November 7, 1903, in the small Ohio community of Columbus Grove, he grew up on a farm where he honed his booming voice by practicing oratory on the cows, a habit that later won him several speech contests. After a brief stint as a schoolteacher at seventeen, he pursued formal drama training at Chicago’s Lyceum Arts Conservatory, which launched him into a series of stock‑company roles and a Broadway debut in 1925. His breakthrough arrived with the hit play Tobacco Road in 1933, and by 1934 he signed a contract with Paramount, appearing in a string of early sound films such as You Belong to Me and College Rhythm. The role that cemented his Hollywood stature was his portrayal of Mormon leader Brigham Young in the 1940 epic of the same name, a performance that impressed both critics and future collaborators. In 1949 he earned the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his nuanced turn as Major Harvey Stovall in Henry King’s Twelve O'Clock High, a part that highlighted his ability to blend gravitas with humanity. Over the following decades he became a familiar face in classics like White Christmas, The Nun’s Story, and the TV series Mr. Novak, for which he received multiple Emmy nominations. Even as he aged, Jagger continued to work prolifically, appearing in genre films such as X the Unknown and Game of Death, and earning a Daytime Emmy for a guest spot on This Is the Life. He retired after a final television appearance in 1985, leaving behind a legacy marked by versatility, dedication, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
