David L. Hewitt: Movies & Filmography

David L. Hewitt (born August 12, 1939) is an American film director and producer known for his prolific work in low-budget independent cinema and genre filmmaking. Born in San Francisco, California, Hewitt began his career in entertainment as a teenager working as an illusionist in the traveling spook show Dr. Jekyll's Strange Show, an experience that helped shape his flair for theatrical presentation. His early interest in motion pictures led him to contact legendary science fiction personality Forrest J. Ackerman, offering him a film script titled Journey into the Unknown, which was later rewritten by Ib Melchior and retitled The Time Travellers. His directing debut came in 1965 with Monsters Crash the Pajama Party, a short film that established his style and entrepreneurial approach to filmmaking. Throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, Hewitt became a remarkably prolific filmmaker, frequently writing, producing, and directing his own projects under his American General Pictures banner. Hewitt's filmography is characterized by his versatility and willingness to tackle a wide array of genres, including science fiction, horror, biker films, and exploitation cinema. Some of his most notable directorial efforts include The Wizard of Mars (1965), an uncredited science fiction adaptation of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz; Journey to the Center of Time (1967); Dr. Terror's Gallery of Horrors (1967), a horror anthology featuring horror icon John Carradine that has since achieved significant cult status; Hell's Chosen Few (1968), a biker movie starring Jody Daniel and Kelly Ross; The Mighty Gorga (1969), in which he also portrayed the title character alongside actress Megan Timothy; and The Girls from Thunder Strip (1970), which also starred Timothy. He additionally directed the Nazisploitation film The Tormentors (1971) under the pseudonym B. Eagle, and later helmed The Lucifer Complex (1978). In his later career, Hewitt transitioned into visual effects production, contributing his technical expertise to major studio productions including The Quiet American, Rabbit-Proof Fence, and Inspector Gadget 2, demonstrating his enduring passion for cinematic storytelling and special effects artistry. Two of his earlier films were infamously retitled Alien Massacre by Regal Video, Inc. of New York in an unauthorized packaging scheme, adding to his cult following among genre film enthusiasts worldwide.
