David Gelb, born on October 16, 1983, is an esteemed American director of film and television, who has carved a niche for himself in the documentary genre. Born and raised in Manhattan, New York City, Gelb's fascination with filmmaking is deeply rooted in his family's longstanding relation with the arts. His father, Peter Gelb, held the revered position of general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, while his paternal grandfather, Arthur Gelb, was previously a managing editor of The New York Times. He started his educational journey at Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School, and later graduated from the University of Southern California.

Gelb's work is most recognized for its focus on food and cuisine. He burst into the limelight with the release of his 2011 film, Jiro Dreams of Sushi.
