David Hoyt Canary (August 25, 1938 – November 16, 2015) was an American actor whose career spanned nearly five decades across television, film, and Broadway. Born in Elwood, Indiana, and raised in Massillon, Ohio, Canary was the middle son of Hilary Canary and Lorena Heal, with brothers including actor John Canary and writer Hilary Glenn Canary. Before pursuing acting, he was a standout football player at Massillon Washington High School, graduating in 1956, and earned a football scholarship to the University of Cincinnati, where he was a three-year letterman and won the John Pease Award as the program's best lineman in his junior and senior years. Despite being selected by the Denver Broncos in the inaugural 1960 American Football League draft, Canary chose acting over professional football, earning a bachelor's degree in music from the university in 1960. After serving two years in the United States Army, where he entered an All-Army Entertainment Contest in 1963, he moved to Los Angeles to launch his acting career.

Canary achieved international fame for two iconic television roles: ranch foreman Candy Canaday on the NBC Western drama Bonanza, which he joined in 1967 after appearing in the classic Western film Hombre with Paul Newman, and the dual roles of Adam Chandler and his meek twin brother Stuart Chandler on the ABC soap opera All My Children, which he began on New Year's Eve in 1983. His portrayal of Adam Chandler earned him 16 Daytime Emmy Award nominations and five wins for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Canary's extensive career also included a semi-regular role in Peyton Place, guest appearances on Gunsmoke, Hawaii Five-O, Kung-Fu, and Law & Order, as well as the role of mobster Frank Gusenberg in The St. Valentine's Day Massacre (1967). Notably, he was considered as a replacement for Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock on Star Trek during a 1967 contract dispute. A trained baritone, he performed on Broadway in Tennessee Williams's Clothes for a Summer Hotel alongside Geraldine Page and appeared in numerous musical productions including Man of La Mancha, Sweeney Todd, and Carousel. He was married to actress Julie M. Anderson from 1965 to 1971 and later to actress Maureen Maloney in 1982, with whom he had a son, Chris, and a daughter, Kate; he also had a daughter, Lisa, from his first marriage. Canary retired from full-time acting in 2010 but returned occasionally before reprising his Adam Chandler role for the show's 2011 finale and 2013 online episodes. He died on November 16, 2015, at an assisted living facility in Wilton, Connecticut, at the age of 77, after being diagnosed with dementia years earlier.
