David Bailie (4 December 1937 – 5 March 2021) was a South African‑born actor whose versatile career spanned stage, television, and film for nearly six decades. Born in Springs, South Africa, he attended boarding school in Swaziland before his family moved to Rhodesia in 1952, where his first taste of performance came in a 1955 amateur production of Doctor in the House. After brief stints in a bank and with Central African Airlines, he traveled to Britain in 1958 and soon after secured a minor role in Flame in the Streets (1961), marking the start of a prolific on‑screen journey. He honed his craft at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, initially paying his own tuition before receiving a scholarship, and quickly joined repertory theatres, the Everyman in Liverpool, and later the National Theatre under Sir Laurence Olivier. In the mid‑1960s he became an associate artist with the Royal Shakespeare Company, sharing the stage with luminaries such as Judi Dench and delivering memorable performances as Florizel in The Winter’s Tale and Valentine in The Two Gentlemen of Verona. Although he paused his acting to run a furniture‑making business from 1980 to 1989, Bailie returned to the spotlight in the 1990s, appearing as Skewer in Cutthroat Island (1995) and as a judge in The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999). His most iconic role arrived in the early 2000s as the mute pirate Cotton in Pirates of the Caribbean, a character he portrayed across three films without uttering a line, yet conveying depth through expressive movement and his trained parrot. Beyond acting, Bailie was a professional photographer specializing in portraiture, operated a studio in West Kensington, and pursued interests in videography, computer programming, and furniture design. He remained creatively active until his passing in 2021, leaving a legacy of dedication, adaptability, and artistic curiosity.
