David Atkinson (born June 22, 1921, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and deceased June 29, 2012) was a renowned Canadian baritone whose career spanned stage, screen, and academia, earning him a distinguished place in North‑American performing arts. From an early age he displayed a prodigious vocal talent, studying voice at the University of Toronto while simultaneously pursuing drama courses that cultivated his dramatic instincts. After World II service, he made his operatic debut with the Toronto Opera Association, quickly attracting the attention of larger houses, and by the late 1940s he was engaged by the New York City Opera, where his resonant baritone and impeccable diction made him a favorite in roles such as Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro and Marcello in La Bohème. His versatility led to a successful parallel career in musical theatre, most notably starring as Friedrich in a celebrated 1955 revival of The Merry Widow and delivering a critically acclaimed performance as Mack the Knife in The Threepenny Opera. Beyond the stage, Atkinson ventured into film and television, appearing in supporting roles that showcased his subtle acting style, including a memorable turn in the 1963 CBC drama series The Investigators.
