Dan Curtis (born Daniel Mayer Cherkoss on August 12, 1927 in Bridgeport, Connecticut) was an influential American television and film director, screenwriter, and producer whose work helped define the gothic‑horror aesthetic on the small screen. Dark Shadows (1966‑1971), the cult gothic soap opera he created, introduced viewers to brooding vampires, witches and haunted mansions, and it spawned a series of feature films including House of Dark Shadows (1970) and Night of Dark Shadows (1971). Curtis also earned a reputation for turning true‑crime curiosity into television events, directing the record‑breaking TV movies The Night Stalker (1972) and its sequel The Night Strangler (1973), which later inspired the series Kolchak: The Night Stalker. His collaboration with horror writers such as Richard Matheson and William F. Nolan produced iconic adaptations of classic monsters, most notably Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1974) and the chilling anthology Trilogy of Terror (1975). In the mid‑1970s he ventured into mainstream drama with the sentimental TV film When Every Day Was the Fourth of July (1978), a semi‑autobiographical look at his own childhood in 1930s Bridgeport. The pinnacle of his epic storytelling arrived with the massive World War II miniseries The Winds of War (1983) and its sequel War and Remembrance (1988‑1989), the latter earning him an Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series and a Directors Guild award. Over a career spanning four decades, Curtis amassed five Emmy nominations, multiple DGA recognitions, and left a lasting legacy that continues through posthumous honors such as the 2023 Rondo Hatton Monster Kid Hall of Fame induction. He died from a brain tumor on March 27, 2006, twenty days after the death of his beloved wife, Norma Mae Klein, and was survived by three children, including two daughters.
