Crystal Moselle: Movies & Box Office

Crystal Moselle (born Sierra Ditson Moselle on August 1, 1980 in San Francisco, California) is an American filmmaker known for her immersive documentary style and her focus on youthful subcultures. After graduating from Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley in 1998, she pursued visual arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where she honed her skills in directing and editing. Moselle's career began in earnest in 2002, when she started working on independent film projects while living in New York, and she has remained active ever since. Her breakout work, The Wolfpack (2015), emerged from a chance encounter with the Angulo brothers, six siblings who had been confined to a single apartment for most of their lives; the documentary premiered at Sundance and won the Documentary Grand Jury Prize, bringing widespread attention to her empathetic storytelling approach. In 2016, Moselle collaborated with fashion house Miu Miu for the Women’s Tales series, creating the short That One Day, which featured teenage skater girls she had befriended in a city park and debuted at the Venice Film Festival. Building on that momentum, she expanded the concept into her first narrative feature, Skate Kitchen (2018), casting many of the same young skaters and premiering again at Sundance, where critics praised its authentic voice and kinetic energy. Moselle further translated the Skate Kitchen universe to television with Betty (2020–2021), an HBO series on which she served as writer, director, and executive producer, cementing her reputation for championing under‑represented youthful perspectives. Subsequent projects include the sci‑fi short My Robot Sophia (2022) and the upcoming feature The Black Sea (2024). Throughout her career, Moselle has been celebrated for blending documentary realism with narrative flair, and she continues to explore new forms while remaining devoted to the stories of marginalized youth.
