Clare Greet (born Clara Greet) was a distinguished English stage and film actress whose career spanned nearly five decades. Born on 14 June 1871 in Leicestershire, England, she was the daughter of John Greet and his wife Fanny. She received her early education privately at Leamington Spa before attending the Girls' College in Brighton. Her theatrical training was rigorous and comprehensive, studying under renowned instructors including Hermann Vezin, Emile Behnke, and Ben Greet, to whom she was not related despite sharing a surname. Greet made her stage debut in 1891 with the Ben Greet Company, where she honed her craft by performing numerous roles in Shakespearean plays and old comedies. Her early career included significant engagements at prestigious London venues, including the Garrick Theatre under John Hare, and various touring productions across Britain. She notably toured in the United States with the celebrated actress Lillian Russell and performed extensively in the British provinces with companies led by May Fortescue and Grace Hawthorne. Greet's career progressed to include prominent West End appearances from 1907 onwards, with notable roles in premieres of several George Bernard Shaw plays, including The Doctor's Dilemma, Major Barbara, and Androcles and the Lion. She transitioned to the rapidly growing film industry in 1921, appearing in her first film The Rotters and subsequently building a substantial filmography over the next eighteen years. Her notable film roles included appearances in Alfred Hitchcock's Murder! (1930), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), Sabotage (1936), and her final film, Jamaica Inn (1939), released posthumously. Throughout her career, Greet was known for her versatile character work, often playing maternal figures, landladies, and other supporting roles. She passed away in her sleep on 14 February 1939 at her flat in Chelsea, London, at the age of 67, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances across both stage and screen.
