Charlie McDermott (born Charles Joseph McDermott Jr. on April 6, 1990) is an American musician, retired actor, director, and writer who first attracted attention with his early film debut in M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller The Village (2004). He quickly progressed from supporting parts to a critically acclaimed performance as T.J. Eddy in the indie crime drama Frozen River (2008), a role that earned him a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male and established him as a promising talent in independent cinema. After the success of Frozen River, McDermott broadened his audience with a comedic turn in the teen road‑movie Sex Drive (2008) before landing what would become his most recognizable television role: the sarcastic teenage son Axl Heck on the long‑running ABC sitcom The Middle (2009‑2018).
