He first broke into the industry in 1999, quickly establishing himself as a versatile performer capable of handling both dramatic and action‑oriented roles. Parnell’s most internationally recognized role came in 2022 when he portrayed Rear Admiral Solomon "Warlock" Bates in the blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, a performance that earned him notable praise for bringing gravitas and a subtle sense of humor to the military character. Prior to that, he became a familiar face to daytime television audiences as the second actor to assume the role of Police Chief Derek Frye on the long‑running soap All My Children from 2004 to 2008, a stint that demonstrated his ability to sustain a complex character over several years.
