Carroll Ballard (born October 14, 1937) is an American filmmaker whose career began in the documentary realm before blossoming into a celebrated tenure as a feature‑film director and cinematographer. Born in Los Angeles, California, he served in the U.S. Army and then pursued film studies at UCLA, where he counted future auteur Francis Ford Coppola among his classmates. His early professional work included the U.S. Information Agency documentaries Beyond This Winter's Wheat (1965) and Harvest (1967), the latter earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature. Ballard also experimented with inventive short subjects such as The Perils of Priscilla (1969), filmed from a cat’s point of view, and Rodeo (1970), an intimate portrait of the National Finals Rodeo. In addition to directing, he contributed cinematography to high‑profile projects, shooting the title sequence for Coppola’s Finian’s Rainbow (1968) and serving as second‑unit director of photography on Star Wars (1977), where he captured many of the iconic desert scenes.
