Carmen Giménez (formerly known as Carmen Giménez Smith) is an acclaimed American poet, memoirist, editor, and publisher whose work has profoundly shaped contemporary American letters. Born on February 20, 1971, in New York City, she earned a BA from San Jose State University and an MFA from the prestigious Iowa Writers' Workshop. Her career trajectory spans teaching positions at New Mexico State University, Virginia Tech, and Bennington College, where she shared her expertise with emerging writers. In 2002, Giménez founded Noemi Press, an independent literary press she led for twenty years, championing voices from historically marginalized communities, particularly brown and queer writers. In 2022, she ascended to the role of executive director and publisher at the renowned Graywolf Press, one of the most respected independent literary publishers in the United States. She also co-directs CantoMundo, a national workshop for Latinx writers. Giménez is the author of six poetry collections and a memoir that explores themes of motherhood, identity, and artistic life. Her collection Be Recorder (2019) was a finalist for the National Book Award for Poetry, as well as the PEN/Open Book Award, the Audre Lorde Award for Lesbian Poetry, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Her memoir, Bring Down the Little Birds, received an American Book Award in 2011, while her collection Goodbye, Flicker won the Juniper Prize for Poetry.
