Carlos Reygadas Castillo is an influential Mexican filmmaker, acclaimed for his existentialist art and philosophy. His works predominantly feature contemplative spiritual journeys into the inner worlds of his main characters, examining themes of love, suffering, death, and life's meaning. He has been referred to as the 'one-man third wave of Mexican cinema' and his art films are renowned for their expressionistic cinematography, extended takes, and emotionally resonant stories. His debut and third films, Japón (2002) and Silent Light (2007), garnered him a reputation as one of Latin America's foremost writer-directors, with various critics deeming Silent Light among the greatest films of its decade. His other notable works, Battle in Heaven (2005) and Post Tenebras Lux (2012), evoked polarizing responses among critics. Moreover, he has played a significant role in producing other directors' works such as Amat Escalante and Pedro Aguilera. Reygadas's love for cinema began in 1987, following exposure to the work of Soviet filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky. He started his film career by participating in a Belgian film competition with his first short film, Maxhumain in 1997. Two years later, he wrote his first feature-length movie, Japón, leading to critical accolades including a special mention for the Caméra d'Or award at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, and the Coral Award of the Havana Film Festival.
