Byron Palmer was born on June 21, 1920, in Los Angeles, California, into a prominent family as the second of four children to Harlan G. Palmer, a notable politician, judge, and publisher of the historic Hollywood Citizen News. While attending Occidental College, he began his media career by writing obituaries for his father's newspaper before joining CBS as a page, which eventually led to his role as a radio news reporter and announcer. During World War II, Palmer served in the Army Air Forces, where he operated a radio station on a Pacific island and entertained troops by singing tenor with a quartet called the Music Mates, an experience that earned him fan mail and inspired him to pursue voice training after the war concluded. His entertainment career spanned multiple mediums including film, television, and stage, with his screen debut occurring in 1953 in the musical film Tonight We Sing. He subsequently appeared in several notable films including Man in the Attic alongside Jack Palance, The Best Things in Life Are Free with Gordon MacRae, Emergency Hospital, Ma and Pa Kettle at Waikiki, and the 1956 feature Glory. On Broadway, Palmer showcased his theatrical talents by starring alongside Ray Bolger in Where's Charley? in 1948 and appearing in the early 1950s revue Bless You All with Pearl Bailey, demonstrating his versatility as a performer.

His television career was equally distinguished, serving as the host for the prestigious Miss Universe pageants in 1958 and 1959 on the CBS network. He also hosted the syndicated variety program This is Your Music in 1955 and co-hosted the popular series Bride and Groom, which aired first on CBS and later on NBC. Additionally, he made guest appearances on numerous television shows including Perry Mason, The Ed Sullivan Show, The Betty White Show, Pete and Gladys, How to Marry a Millionaire, Lawman, and Soldiers of Fortune. In his personal life, Palmer married three times: first to his high school sweetheart JoAnn Ransom with whom he had one child, then to beauty queen and actress Ruth Hampton with whom he had two children, and finally to actress Georgine Darcy, famous for her role as Miss Torso in Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window, remaining with her until her death in 2004. Palmer passed away on September 30, 2009, at the age of 89 in his native Los Angeles and was laid to rest at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy as a multifaceted entertainer who successfully navigated the golden age of radio, Broadway, and both classic Hollywood cinema and early television.
