Byron Kane (May 9, 1923 – April 10, 1984) was an American radio and film actor, voice artist and producer whose career spanned the golden age of radio through the early 1980s. Born in Vermont and raised in California, Kane developed an early fascination with broadcasting, spending afternoons wandering studio backlots and running errands for producers while still a teenager. At age seventeen, during the summer of 1940, he slipped into the CBS Columbia Square studios and unexpectedly auditioned for a Forecast episode directed by Norman Corwin, impressing the crew enough to be cast as Charlie, the boyfriend of the novel’s heroine Bethel Merriday. This breakthrough led to live performances alongside luminaries such as Margaret Sullavan and Lurene Tuttle, and cemented his reputation as a reliable talent on shows like Lux Radio Theatre and Suspense. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Kane became a familiar voice on a wide array of programs, including Gunsmoke, The NBC University Theater, Plays for Americans, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar and On Stage. His wartime service at Camp Fannin saw him assist Orson Welles on the Fifth War Loan drive, reflecting his continued connection to the industry even while in the military. Transitioning to television, he served as associate producer for Blake Edwards’ detective series Peter Gunn (1958‑1961) and occasionally appeared on‑screen as Barney the bartender, an uncredited but memorable role. Kane also contributed his distinctive voice to the animated series The Hardy Boys (1969), portraying the character Peter Jones. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, he returned to his radio roots, starring in multiple episodes of Sears Radio Theater. His final screen appearance came as a cameo in Edwards’ satirical comedy S.O.B. (1981). A respected figure among peers such as Hal Ashby, Jeff Chandler and Sammy Davis Jr., Kane even served as a pallbearer at Chandler’s funeral in 1961. He died in Los Angeles on April 10, 1984, two weeks after a heart attack, leaving behind a legacy of versatility across radio, television and film.
