Blutch, the pen name of Christian Hincker, was born on 27 December 1967 in Strasbourg, France, and quickly rose to become one of the most influential figures in contemporary French comics. After completing his studies at the École supérieure des arts décoratifs de Strasbourg, he entered the professional sphere through a competition run by the satirical monthly Fluide Glacial, where his early work—Pecos Jim, Waldo's Bar, and Mademoiselle Sunnymoon—appeared between 1988 and 1993. The nickname “Blutch” was bestowed by a classmate who noted his uncanny resemblance to Corporal Blutch from Les Tuniques Bleues, a moniker that would later become his artistic identity. Throughout the 1990s, he cultivated a reputation for versatility, joining the avant‑garde collective at L’Association in 1993 and later contributing to the historic series Péplum in A Suivre magazine in 1996. Projects such as Rancho Bravo (with Jean‑Louis Capron) and the meta‑satirical Blotch showcased his capacity to blend humor, critique, and self‑reflexivity, while his two‑volume autobiographical work Le petit Christian (1998/2008) revealed a deeply personal narrative voice that resonated with readers and critics alike. His later graphic novels, including Vitesse Moderne (2002) and La Volupté (2006), solidified his standing as a master of both form and content, earning him prestigious honors such as the Prix international de la Ville de Genève for Vitesse Moderne and the 2009 Grand Prix de la Ville d’Angoulême, which subsequently led to his presidency of the Angoulême comic festival in 2010.
