Carl William Raisch, professionally known as Bill Raisch, was born on April 5, 1905, in North Bergen, New Jersey, to German immigrant parents, establishing his roots as a first-generation American who would later redefine physical performance in Hollywood. Before his acting career took shape, Raisch worked hauling cement at construction sites, where he developed significant physical strength that led him to amateur boxing and eventually professional dancing. His breakthrough came when he served as a dancing partner to a young woman attending social events, catching the eye of legendary Broadway impresario Florenz Ziegfeld Jr., who promptly signed him to the prestigious Ziegfeld Follies dance troupe. Raisch made his stage debut at the New Amsterdam Roof Theater in the late 1920s, specializing in adagio performances throughout New York City, and during this vibrant period of his life, he married Adele Smith, a fellow dancer from the Ziegfeld company, cementing his place in the entertainment world through both professional artistry and personal commitment.

Raisch's life took a dramatic turn in early 1945 while serving in the United States Merchant Marine during World War II, when a devastating shipboard fire resulted in severe burns to his right arm, necessitating amputation at the elbow and fundamentally altering his career trajectory. Rather than retreating from performance, he relocated to Los Angeles in 1946 and transformed his disability into a defining characteristic, appearing as an extra and stuntman in The War of the Worlds (1953) and memorably portraying a warrior whose arm is severed in Spartacus (1960), where Kirk Douglas's character strikes off Raisch's prosthetic limb with a sword. However, it was his portrayal of the elusive One-Armed Man on the groundbreaking television series The Fugitive (1963–1967) that secured his place in pop culture history, with TV Guide later ranking his character as the fifth nastiest villain of all time in their 2013 retrospective. Despite appearing in only eleven episodes total across four seasons, his image became ubiquitous through the show's opening credits beginning in season two, creating an iconic antagonist who was ultimately revealed as the true murderer of Dr. Kimble's wife in the series finale. Beyond his on-screen work as Burt Lancaster's stand-in and his subsequent typecasting as criminals due to his disability, Raisch dedicated his later years to coaching the next generation of actors in Los Angeles until his death from lung cancer on July 31, 1984, at age 79.
