Betty Ross Clarke, born May Clarke on May 1, 1892, in Langdon, North Dakota, was an American actress whose career spanned the transformative years of the entertainment industry from the silent film era through the early golden age of Hollywood sound cinema. Descended from a distinguished lineage that included Civil War brigadier general Leonard F. Ross and Illinois pioneer Ossian M. Ross, who founded the cities of Lewistown and Havana, Clarke relocated with her family to Minneapolis at the tender age of three, where she completed her education at local institutions and the prestigious Stanley Hall School. Initially pursuing her passion for performance through rigorous dance training in New York City and a year spent touring the vaudeville circuit, she originally aspired to become a professional ballet dancer, but her natural talent for dramatic acting soon led her to the theatrical stage. She launched her professional acting career with a stock company in Halifax, Nova Scotia, followed by engagements in Pittsburgh, Haverhill, Massachusetts, and Sioux City, Iowa, before making her significant Broadway debut on September 19, 1917, at the Comedy Theatre in "The Family Exit," which established her as a rising star in legitimate theater. Clarke's cinematic journey began in 1920 and encompassed more than thirty films over two decades, bridging the transition from silent films to talkies with remarkable versatility. Following her marriage to Los Angeles banker and former British Royal Flying Corps lieutenant Arthur Greville Collins in 1921, she relocated to England in 1923, where she obtained British citizenship and expanded her theatrical repertoire with a London stage debut at the Royalty Theatre in 1924, followed by performances in Australia in 1926. The couple returned to Hollywood in 1929 to capitalize on the burgeoning sound film industry, where Clarke resumed her screen career, frequently appearing in supporting and character roles, including uncredited performances, while occasionally receiving top billing as Betsy Ross Clarke or Betty Ross Clark. Notable among her sound film appearances were her replacement of actress Sara Haden as Aunt Millie in the popular Andy Hardy series, and her work in preserved silent classics such as "If I Were King" and "Mother o' Mine," which now reside in the Library of Congress and UCLA Film and Television Archive. Despite being celebrated as an "ardent feminist" by the San Francisco Center of the League of Women Voters in 1930 for her advocacy of women's voting rights, ironically she could not vote herself until regaining her American citizenship on December 28, 1934, following her divorce from Collins. She continued to grace both stage and screen until 1940, ultimately retiring to Los Angeles where she passed away on January 24, 1970, at the age of 77, leaving behind a rich artistic legacy and her final resting place at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.
