Born in London on 28 May 1906, Barnes grew up in a modest household and displayed an early fascination with performance, frequently entertaining classmates with impromptu monologues. After completing his education, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where his resonant baritone voice and striking presence caught the attention of several theatre directors. By the early 1930s he had secured his first professional engagements, making his West End debut in a revival of The Importance of Being Earnest, where critics praised his “effortless charm” and “natural timing.”

Transitioning to film in 1932, Barnes quickly became a familiar face in British cinema, noted for his versatility in both light‑hearted comedies and hard‑boiled thrillers. He starred alongside famed contemporaries such as Anna Neagle and Michael Redgrave, delivering memorable performances in The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) and the wartime drama The Shadow of the Past (1942).
