Ayrton Senna da Silva was born on 21 March 1960 in the Santana district of São Paulo, Brazil, to a wealthy family of mixed Italian, Spanish and Portuguese ancestry. From the age of four he was fascinated by cars, and at thirteen he began karting on the Interlagos circuit with a kart his father built from a lawn‑mower engine. He quickly rose through the junior ranks, winning the South American Kart Championship in 1977 and finishing runner‑up twice in the Karting World Championship, before dominating Formula Ford and British Formula Three, where he claimed the 1983 title and the prestigious Macau Grand Prix. Senna made his Formula One debut with Toleman in 1984, impressing with a spectacular drive in the wet Monaco Grand Prix that announced his arrival on the world stage. His move to Lotus in 1985 yielded his first Grand Prix victory at the rain‑soaked Portuguese Grand Prix, and over the next two seasons he amassed multiple wins and pole positions, establishing a reputation for extraordinary speed in wet conditions and meticulous technical feedback. In 1988 he joined McLaren, forming a legendary rivalry with Alain Prost; together they won 15 of 16 races that season, and Senna secured his first World Drivers’ Championship, followed by titles in 1990 and 1991, a total of 41 Grand Prix wins, 65 pole positions and 80 podiums. Beyond the track, Senna was a devout Catholic and a committed philanthropist, secretly funding education projects that later became the Instituto Ayrton Senna, which continues to support disadvantaged Brazilian children. Tragically, his career was cut short on 1 May 1994 at the San Marino Grand Prix when a steering‑column failure caused a fatal crash at Imola. His death sparked worldwide mourning, a state funeral attended by over a million people, and accelerated safety reforms that have saved countless lives in the years since.
