Asit Baran (born Asit Baran Mukherjee) was a multifaceted Indian actor, singer, and theater personality who left an indelible mark on Bengali and Hindi cinema during the mid-twentieth century. Born on 19 November 1913 in Kolkata, then part of the Bengal Presidency under British India, Asit Baran grew up in a culturally vibrant environment that nurtured his artistic inclinations from an early age. Affectionately known by his nickname Kalo, he initially worked at the telegraph workshop in Alipore before his passion for music led him to study Tabla under the renowned maestro Jnan Prakash Ghosh. His exceptional musical talent eventually earned him a position as a Tabla player at Akashbani Kolkata (All India Radio), where his performances caught the attention of the celebrated Bengali actor Pahari Sanyal during an All India Radio Music Conference. This pivotal encounter inspired him to transition into the world of acting and singing, marking the beginning of a remarkable career in the performing arts.

Asit Baran made his film debut in Pratishruti in 1941, and over the next four decades, he established himself as a prominent figure in the Indian film industry. He worked as both an actor and singer in numerous Bengali and Hindi films, demonstrating remarkable versatility across genres and styles. His filmography includes notable works such as Kashinath (1943), Parineeta (1953), Hrad (1955), Badsha (1963), Antony Firingee, and Nishachar (1971), among many others. Beyond his film career, Asit Baran was also passionate about stage performances and founded the theater group Rangarash, contributing significantly to the cultural landscape of Kolkata. He was frequently invited to sing at various music functions throughout the city, where his melodious voice and charismatic stage presence made him a beloved figure. Asit Baran passed away on 27 November 1984 in Kolkata, West Bengal, at the age of 71, leaving behind a rich legacy in Indian cinema and theater that continues to be celebrated.
