António Fonseca is a Portuguese former professional footballer best known for his role as a left back during the late 20th century, and later as a technical director for the Canadian Soccer Association. Born on 30 January 1965 in Lisbon, Portugal, he began his youth career at a series of local clubs before joining the academy of Benfica in 1982, where he completed his development. His senior debut came with Cova Piedade in the 1983‑84 season, and after spells at Alcobaça and Tirsense he earned a transfer to Benfica in 1987, marking the start of his top‑flight career. During the 1988‑89 campaign Fonseca was a regular starter as Benfica captured the Primeira Liga title and reached the Taça de Portugal final, demonstrating defensive solidity and occasional attacking contribution. After three seasons with Benfica he moved to Vitória Guimarães and later to Estrela da Amadora, accumulating a total of 199 Primeira Liga appearances and two league goals across his time in Portugal. He earned four caps for the Portugal national team between 1989 and 1990, debuting in a 6–0 friendly victory over Angola that celebrated the federation’s 75th anniversary. In 1999 he crossed the Atlantic to join the Vancouver Whitecaps in the USL A‑League, where he played two seasons before retiring in 2000 at the age of 35. Transitioning directly into coaching, Fonseca managed the Whitecaps from 2002 to 2004 and later served as assistant coach for the Canada national team between 2007 and 2012, also overseeing the Canada U23 side. In 2013 he was appointed interim head coach of the senior Canadian team following Colin Miller’s departure, before returning to his role as technical director. His technical expertise has been credited with modernising Canada’s youth development pathways, integrating European tactical principles with North American athleticism. Off the pitch, Fonseca married a Portuguese‑Canadian partner and the couple have two children, reflecting his personal ties to both Portugal and Canada. His career exemplifies a seamless shift from player to manager and administrator, contributing to football development on two continents.
