Anny Ondra: Movies & Box Office

Born Anna Sophie Ondráková on 15 May 1903 in Tarnów, Galicia (then part of Austria-Hungary, now Poland), Anny Ondra emerged as one of the most captivating figures of European cinema during the early twentieth century. Raised in a family with military roots—her father Bohumír Ondrák served as an officer in the Austro-Hungarian Army—she spent her formative years traversing Tarnów, Pula, and Prague, receiving education at a convent school before defying societal conventions to pursue acting. Her career ignited in 1919 when she appeared in her first film directed by her then-boyfriend, the filmmaker Karel Lamač, sparking a prolific collaboration that would span decades and encompass over ninety films across silent and sound eras. Ondra's breakthrough arrived with Gilly in Prague for the First Time (1920), establishing her as a luminous presence in Czech and Austrian cinema before conquering the German market with Eve's Daughters (1928) and Sinful and Sweet (1929).

Her international reputation crystallized through her work with Alfred Hitchcock, particularly in The Manxman and Blackmail (both 1929), where she became immortalized as cinema's first "Hitchcock blonde." The production of Blackmail marked a pivotal technical milestone as Britain's first sound film; however, Ondra's pronounced Czech accent rendered her dialogue problematic for English audiences, leading Hitchcock to pioneer the dubbing process by having British actress Joan Barry voice her lines while Ondra lip-synched on screen—making Ondra the first foreign-language dubbed actress in film history. In 1933, she married world heavyweight boxing champion Max Schmeling, forming a high-profile union that endured until her death. Despite Nazi attempts to exploit their fame for propaganda purposes—portraying Schmeling as a German superman and Ondra as a blonde Aryan ideal—the couple refused to collaborate with the regime, with Schmeling secretly saving Jewish children from persecution. Following World War II, they faced financial ruin and an arrest warrant in Czechoslovakia for alleged collaboration, eventually settling in Hollenstedt near Hamburg in 1949. Though she miscarried after a 1936 car accident and remained childless, Ondra continued acting until 1951, receiving the Honorary German Film Award in 1970 before her death on 28 February 1987.
