Annemarie Wendl was a distinguished German actress whose career spanned over four decades, leaving an indelible mark on both stage and screen. Born on 26 December 1914 into an upper-class family in Bavaria, Wendl pursued her passion for acting by training at Lucie Höflich's seminar in Berlin, where she honed her craft and developed the skills that would define her prolific career. Her early theatrical work saw her perform classical roles across multiple German-speaking cities, including Berlin, Bonn, Augsburg, Innsbruck, Munich, Meiningen, Bamberg, and Ingolstadt. In her youth, she frequently embodied sentimental characters such as Gretchen in Faust and Emilia Galotti, showcasing her versatility and emotional depth. As she matured, Wendl transitioned into more complex character roles, demonstrating remarkable range in productions like Adelheid in Götz von Berlichingen, Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire, Maria Stuart in Schiller's play, and the title role in Brecht's Mother Courage. Her final theatrical performances included The Widow in the Green Tree in 1997 and Sanssouci in 2001, cementing her legacy as a formidable stage presence. Transitioning to film in 1961, Wendl accumulated more than 35 film and television credits over the course of her career. She notably collaborated with acclaimed director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, appearing in films such as I Only Want You To Love Me in 1976. Her television portfolio included guest appearances in popular series like Die fünfte Kolonne, Meister Eder und sein Pumuckl, and Der Kommissar. However, Wendl is perhaps most iconic for her portrayal of Else Kling in the beloved German weekly soap opera Lindenstraße, which debuted in December 1985. She appeared in the very first episode, Herzlich Willkommen, and remained a fixture of the cast until May 2006. Her character's storyline, including the tragic loss of her husband Egon Kling in a car accident in Paris in 1998, captivated audiences for decades. Following her character's death in the episode Abschied und Ankunft (#1069), Wendl received attention in the yellow press regarding her declining health after suffering a stroke in 2005 and three bouts of pneumonia. Wendl, who was married to Siegmar Kleinschmidt from 1942 until his death in 1944, passed away at the age of 91, leaving behind a son and a legacy that continues to influence German television and theater.
