Anne Grey, born Aileen Stephen Ewing on 6 March 1907 in Edmonton, Middlesex, England, was a distinguished English actress whose career spanned the late 1920s through the late 1930s. She received her education at Lausanne and later attended King's College London, where she developed a strong intellectual foundation. Despite originally aspiring to a literary career and hoping to become a journalist, Grey found her true calling in acting and decided to go on stage instead. Her first foray into the film industry came in 1925 when she appeared in a crowd scene in the silent film The Constant Nymph, though her actual credited film career began in 1928. Just two months after her initial film appearance, she secured the second lead in her next picture, demonstrating remarkable early talent and quick advancement in the competitive British film industry of the era. Throughout her career, Anne Grey appeared in an impressive 44 films between 1928 and 1939, working primarily in British cinema before eventually making her way to Hollywood in 1934. Her filmography includes notable titles such as Number Seventeen (1932), The Faithful Heart (1932), Break of Hearts (1935), Bonnie Scotland (1935), Too Many Parents (1936), and Chinatown Nights (1937). She was known for her versatility and ability to bring depth to supporting roles during the transitional period between silent films and the talkies. In her personal life, Grey married actor Lester Matthews in 1931, though the couple divorced in 1938. She later married George Ernest Gordon Hope-Johnstone in 1940, with whom she had one child, and remained married to him until her death.
