Her professional stage debut came in August 1961 at the Edinburgh Festival, where she appeared in Lawrence Durrell's Sappho, a performance that marked the beginning of a distinguished theatrical journey in British theatre. Following her debut, Palk accumulated valuable repertory experience across several esteemed regional theatres, including engagements in Bristol, Leatherhead, Derby, Newcastle upon Tyne, and Leeds, where she refined her versatility and command of the stage through diverse classical and contemporary roles. Her West End breakthrough arrived when she spent a year in a major revival of Noël Coward's Present Laughter during 1965–66, sharing the stage with theatrical luminaries Nigel Patrick and Phyllis Calvert, a testament to her rising status in London's competitive theatre scene. She later demonstrated her contemporary range and willingness to tackle challenging modern material by appearing in the first UK production of David Mamet's Sexual Perversity in Chicago during 1977–78, proving her ability to navigate the evolving landscape of British drama with equal finesse and dedication.
