Andrew Bujalski: Movies & Box Office

Andrew Bujalski is an acclaimed American film director, screenwriter, and actor, who marked his entry into the film industry with his debut feature, Funny Ha Ha, in 2002. Born in Boston in 1977, Bujalski is the offspring of artist-turned-businesswoman Sheila Dubman and businessman Edmund Bujalski. His upbringing was rooted in the realities of Newton, Massachusetts, and he acquired his standing on film study at Harvard's Department of Visual and Environmental Studies, where renowned Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman served as his thesis advisor. His debut feature gained theatrical distribution in 2005, followed by Mutual Appreciation in 2006.

Throughout his career, Bujalski worked tirelessly both behind and in front of the camera, playing significant roles in his films and contributing to the screenplay of the Joe Swanberg film Hannah Takes the Stairs. His subsequent works - Beeswax and Computer Chess - were filmed in Austin, where he currently resides. Notably, Computer Chess, set in a 1980s computer programming tournament, was lauded at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival with the Alfred Sloan Feature Film Prize. His film style is often compared to noted directors like John Cassavetes, Maurice Pialat, and Mike Leigh. Most recently, he lent his screenwriting skills to the live-action remake of Disney’s Lady and the Tramp.
