Andre Royo (born July 18, 1968) is an American actor, producer, and writer whose career has spanned more than two decades, beginning with a modest role in the 1998 film L.A. Without a Map. He grew up in the Bronx, New York City, a culturally diverse borough that informed his mixed African‑American and Cuban heritage and later helped him bring authenticity to the street‑wise characters he famously portrays. After graduating from Mount Saint Michael Academy, Royo broke into television with guest spots on Law & Order and Third Watch, but his breakthrough arrived when he was cast as the drug‑addicted informant Reginald “Bubbles” Cousins on HBO’s critically acclaimed series The Wire. The role earned him a reputation for raw, empathetic performances, and even led to an on‑set encounter that Royo described as his “street Oscar,” when a local Baltimore resident offered him a package of heroin, believing the character was real. Beyond The Wire, he has appeared in a wide array of genres, from the sci‑fi drama Fringe to the period film Red Tails, and has taken on supporting roles in movies such as The Spectacular Now and Lila & Eve. His versatility extends to voice work on animated series like Bob’s Burgers and to recurring parts on network shows like Empire, where he played the shifty attorney Thirsty Rawlings.
