André Leon Talley was born on October 16, 1948 in Washington, D.C., the son of Alma Ruth Davis and William Carroll "Caro" Talley. Raised largely by his maternal grandmother, Bennie Francis Davis, in Durham, North Carolina, he absorbed an early love for luxury and style that would later define his career. After graduating from Hillside High School in 1966, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in French literature from North Carolina Central University in 1970 and a Master of Arts from Brown University in 1972, where his thesis explored the influence of Black women on Charles Baudelaire. Talley's first foray into the fashion world came in 1974 when he unpaid‑ly assisted Diana Vreeland at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, an experience that opened doors to Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine and a fast‑moving career at Women's Wear Daily as Paris bureau chief. Over the next decade he wrote for W, The New York Times, Ebony, and other publications, cementing his reputation as a sharp‑eyed chronicler of runway culture and a tireless advocate for Black models.

By the early 1980s Talley joined Vogue, first as fashion news director (1983‑1987) and then as the magazine’s inaugural African‑American male creative director (1988‑1995). His flamboyant capes, kaftans, and towering 6‑foot‑6‑inch frame made him a living emblem of high fashion, while his mentorship helped launch the careers of designers like LaQuan Smith and John Galliano. He authored three bestselling books, including The Chiffon Trenches (2020), and served as editor‑at‑large for Numéro Russia before resigning over anti‑LGBT legislation. Talley also styled First Lady Michelle Obama for her historic Vogue cover and advised President Barack Obama on sartorial choices. Recognized with honors such as the Chevalier de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2020) and the North Carolina Award for literature (2021), he remained a cultural touchstone until his death on January 18, 2022, leaving an indelible legacy of advocacy, style, and mentorship.
