Alfred "Alfie" Scopp was a distinguished Canadian actor whose remarkable career spanned multiple decades and mediums, leaving an indelible mark on the entertainment landscape of Canada and beyond. Born on 15 September 1919 in London, England, to a Russian-Jewish father and an English mother, Scopp immigrated to Canada with his family during his childhood, settling in Montreal where he would eventually establish his roots. His early life took a pivotal turn during World War II when he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force stationed in Newfoundland, an experience that inadvertently launched his broadcasting career when he began working for the local radio station CBG (AM). Following his military service, Scopp pursued formal training in the performing arts at the Lorne Greene Academy of Radio Arts, where he studied alongside future luminaries such as Leslie Nielsen, Gordie Tapp, and Fred Davis, honing the skills that would sustain his lifelong vocation in show business.

Scopp's professional trajectory encompassed an impressive array of roles across theatre, radio, film, and television, establishing him as one of Canada's most versatile character actors. He achieved particular renown for his voice acting work, most notably as part of the ensemble cast for the beloved 1964 Christmas special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, where he contributed to a holiday classic that would endure for generations. As one of the longest-lived cast members of this iconic production, Scopp maintained a special connection to the holiday favorite throughout his life. His vocal talents further shone through in the 1960s animated television series Tales of the Wizard of Oz (1961), where he voiced Socrates the Strawman, a role he reprised in the television film Return to Oz (1964). Beyond animation, Scopp made memorable appearances in live-action productions, including a notable turn as Avram the bookseller in the critically acclaimed 1971 film Fiddler on the Roof, which garnered multiple Academy Awards.
