Alan Ruck: Movies & Box Office

Alan Douglas Ruck, born on July 1, 1956, in Cleveland, Ohio, is a notable American actor. He rose to prominence for portraying Cameron Frye in John Hughes' film Ferris Bueller's Day Off in 1986. Ruck has also made his mark through his television roles as Stuart Bondek on the ABC sitcom Spin City from 1996 to 2002, and Connor Roy on the HBO series Succession, from 2018 to 2023. His performance on Succession led to his nomination for Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe Awards. Besides these, he has credit in multiple film roles including Bad Boys (1983), Three Fugitives (1989), Young Guns II (1990), Speed (1994), Star Trek Generations (1994), and Twister (1996). Ruck was born to a schoolteacher mother and a pharmaceutical-company-working father. He attended Parma Senior High School and graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.F.A. in drama in 1979. Ruck's dynamic career led him to different parts of the U.S., including Chicago and New York, where he established himself in both stage and screen roles.

His first film role was in the 1983 drama Bad Boys, which he followed up with a Broadway debut in 1985 in Neil Simon's Biloxi Blues. Ruck commanded roles in theaters around the U.S., followed by feature roles in comedy films like Three for the Road and Three Fugitives. He continued to participate in different roles in movies like Star Trek Generations, Speed, and Twister. From 1990 to 1991, Ruck starred as Chicago ad man Charlie Davis, in the ABC series Going Places. His television ventures led him to work with Michael J. Fox and Charlie Sheen in Spin City. In 2005, he played Leo Bloom in the Broadway version of Mel Brooks' The Producers. He also made appearances in a variety of miniseries and television series including From the Earth to the Moon, Stargate Atlantis, and Cougar Town. Throughout his career, Ruck showed his versatility by playing different characters, from a ghost to a bank robber to a scientist turned criminal. He ended up securing a lead role in the 2010 NBC mystery-drama, Persons Unknown. From 2018 to 2023, Ruck played the role of Connor Roy in the HBO series Succession earning him multiple award nominations.
