Aino Mantsas was born on 29 November 1922 in Helsinki, Finland, and would go on to become one of the notable Finnish actresses of her generation. Throughout her career, she worked for various theatres in Finland, establishing herself as a versatile performer on the stage before eventually making her mark in cinema. Her theatrical background gave her a strong foundation for her screen acting, allowing her to bring depth and nuance to her film performances. She was particularly associated with Finnish cinema of the mid-20th century, contributing to several landmark productions of the era that helped shape the golden age of Finnish filmmaking.

Mantsas was married to the renowned Finnish director Matti Kassila from 1948 until her untimely death in 1979, making their union one of the significant personal and professional partnerships in Finnish film history. This marriage resulted in her being cast in many of Kassila's directorial works, creating a notable on-screen collaboration that produced several memorable performances. Among her most recognized film appearances were Radio tekee murron (1951), Hilman päivät (1954), and Komisario Palmun erehdys (1961). Despite her professional achievements, Mantsas died of breast cancer on 24 January 1979, cutting short what was already a distinguished career with much promise still ahead. In his memoir Mustaa ja valkoista, her husband Matti Kassila described her as a "talented, exceptional human being who found it hard to adjust to the world surrounding her", painting a portrait of an artist who struggled personally even as she excelled professionally on screen.
